I received an advanced reader/listener copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
It feels a little weird to be reading a Christmas book in June when it is in the 80s outside.
A Killer for Christmas takes place in Christmasville, Maine, a town that has completely committed to the Christmas theme. Kelsey Hendricks loses her job and her boyfriend, then finds a listing for a social media manager position in Christmasville, the one place she remembers being truly happy. When she gets there, people start dying.
Kelsey ends up trying to solve the murders before tourists start canceling their reservations and the entire town falls apart and she loses her new job.
I was mostly here for the mystery, and it delivered. I was not totally sure a town built entirely around Christmas could support an actual murder mystery without feeling too ridiculous, but it did. I did not guess the murderer, and the reveal was satisfying. The romance was also the right amount for me. It added to the story without taking over.
Full disclosure, I read this right before Home for the Homicides by Elle Cosimano, and the two books have started to blur together in my head a little because they both take place in Christmas-themed towns. Home for the Homicides is slightly spicy and definitely not cozy, but there were enough similarities that I have to really try to figure out which one was which. .
Overall, this book did exactly what it was trying to do. It was a fun mix of romance and cozy mystery, and it did not try to be anything more than that. If you liked The Most Wonderful Crime of the Year, this one is probably right up your alley.
