The story centers on two young children, Patch and Saint, whose friendship is tested when Patch heroically saves a girl from being abducted, but tragically disappears himself. The narrative then unfolds over decades, weaving together elements of a missing person mystery, a serial killer thriller, and a coming-of-age story.

Whitaker’s writing is both lyrical and suspenseful, keeping you on the edge of your seat while also drawing you into the emotional lives of the characters. The plot twists and turns, keeping you guessing until the very end, but it’s the characters that truly make this book shine.

Characters You Can’t Help But Root For – Whitaker has a remarkable talent for creating characters that feel so real – despite his short chapters and short exchanges – that you can’t help but become emotionally invested in their lives. Saint’s unwavering loyalty and determination to find Patch are both heartbreaking and inspiring. Patch’s own journey is equally compelling as he navigates a world filled with darkness, sadness and determination. Even the characters who make morally questionable choices are portrayed with such depth and complexity that you find yourself understanding their motivations, even if you don’t condone their actions.

This book is an emotional rollercoaster. It’s heartbreaking and suspenseful, but there’s also a thread of hope that runs through it. I was completely invested in these characters and their stories. By the end, I was a blubbering mess, but it was so worth it.

“All the Colors of the Dark” is a powerful and unforgettable read. It’s the kind of book that stays with you long after you’ve finished it. If you’re looking for a beautifully written, emotionally resonant story with complex characters and a mystery that will keep you on the edge of your seat, then this one is for you. Just be prepared to feel all the feels!
