I finally took the plunge and picked up “Riley Thorn and the Dead Guy Next Door” from the library. Yes, an actual physical copy—I almost forgot how satisfying it feels to flip through real pages! Normally, psychic stuff isn’t really my thing, which is probably why I’d been sidestepping this book despite so many recommendations. But curiosity (and a little peer pressure) got the better of me, and I’m glad it did.
First off, let’s talk about Riley’s roommates. Living in a quirky old mansion with a group of eccentric elderly folks sounds like a sitcom waiting to happen – they added so much charm to the story, and their antics had me laughing.
Then there’s Gabe, Riley’s spirit guide. What a big teddy bear! He was endearing from the moment he appeared, providing both guidance and comic relief. Gabe’s interactions with Riley added a heartfelt touch.
I also enjoyed the side plot involving the vigilantes. The vigilante antics added a layer of fun, weaving nicely into the main storyline.
I have to admit that the book felt a little too long – so many pages! It’s longer than it needs to be, and there were times I found myself skimming. While the romance between Riley and Nick Santiago was fun (gruff private investigator meets reluctant psychic), I wanted the plot to move a little faster.
Despite my initial hesitation about the psychic elements—which usually turn me off—the supernatural aspects were handled in a way that didn’t overwhelm the story. Instead, they complemented the mystery and romance, making for an enjoyable read.
“Riley Thorn and the Dead Guy Next Door” was a pleasant surprise. It’s a fun blend of humor, mystery, and a dash of romance (not too spicy! which is the kind I like). If you’re in the mood for a lighthearted read with quirky characters and a sprinkle of the supernatural, I’d recommend giving this one a try.

Who killed Dickie?
The mayor, Nolan Flemming, and his communications director, Duncan, were responsible for Dickie’s murder.
Why?
The mayor was a partner in Dickies bar and was using it as a front for a blackmailing and other waste of making money. Dickie started skimming some of the money from the blackmail and doing stuff on his own, the mayor killed him to keep him from messing up his scheme.
Who killed the representative?
They also murdered the representative, Rob Bowers. The mayor wanted to take his spot in politics and get more powerful. The mayor was blackmailing him for campaign fraud, as well as hooking up with the waitress at Nature Girls.
Who was the bad cop?
The bad cop was Katie Shapiro, she was working with the mayor, but also she was ignoring calls that were coming in and wasn’t investigating, which was why the vigilantes were taking things into their hands. Mrs. Penny and Josie end up being vigilantes.
