One Week Out from the Twin Cities 10 Mile: Reflecting on My Training Journey

We’re just one week away from the Twin Cities 10 Mile, and I couldn’t be more excited! As race day approaches, I’m feeling a mix of anticipation and immense gratitude that I didn’t sign up for the marathon this year. Ten miles feels just right.

In the spirit of making this a family affair, I’ve signed up myself, Joel, and the kiddos for the TC Half Mile on Saturday. I can’t wait to see the kids’ faces when they receive their medals and get to be part of the race-day excitement. It’s going to be a memorable weekend for all of us.

Now, onto the big question: How has my training been? Well, let’s just say it hasn’t been textbook perfect.

Was it good? Of course not. Do I feel ready? Surprisingly, yes!

Thanks to my handy Strava stats (pasted below), I’ve discovered that from July until now, I’ve run a total of 58.6 miles. Sheesh, that’s low. I used to knock out almost that much in a single week! It’s a stark reminder of how much my training volume has changed over the years.

But it’s not like I’ve been completely sedentary. I’ve mixed in some cross-training, and I even tried to stick with a strength program. I was consistent for about two weeks before life got in the way, and I stopped. I’ve also tried to incorporate lots of walking whenever I could, just to get more time on my feet.

While my training regimen won’t get me anywhere near a personal best, I’m okay with that. This race isn’t about setting records; it’s about enjoying the journey. I’m planning to run most of it with a friend I ran with a few years back, which makes the prospect even more enjoyable.

I’m genuinely looking forward to the course. It’s one of my favorites, especially because of the incredible crowd support. There’s something magical about running through the Twin Cities with spectators cheering you on every step of the way.

So, as race day approaches, I’m embracing the experience for what it is. I’m excited to share this moment with my family and friends, and to be part of such a vibrant running community once again.

Here’s to a fantastic race and making lasting memories! Here are a few pictures from the last time I ran the 10 miler in 2021!
