July 12, 2021It’s been over 9 months since I’ve been on a real run. I had to give up running early on in pregnancy due to the bleeding complications and then everything else that went on.
I am no 6+ weeks postpartum with Miles and am trying to not feel discouraged about where I’m at in my running fitness. I find myself comparing to the same postpartum point in time with Hailey, when I was running a 10 mile long run and starting to do speed workouts. I also find myself comparing myself to pre-baby self… which is a hole I should not get into.
I do find myself feeling this sense of hopefulness though – knowing I will not be pregnant again is very relieving and being able to fully take my body back for myself. I am signed up for the Twin Cities 10 Miler in October – I thought that would be a good goal to have. That is my far my favorite race. It is a good distance, it is an amazing course, it is the best atmosphere. I am getting a training plan put in place by my Northstar Running Coach which will be nice to have some structure – or at least something to try to fit into my day. I will have to fit in runs with Miles in the stroller for the time being, especially since I can’t stay up past 8 so will not be fitting runs in after the kids go to bed. (Although, that might have been more doable had my Pelton Treadmill not have been cancelled due to the recall…)
I have been trying to fit runs/workouts in here and there. I have forced myself to be busy this maternity leave with mama and baby classes, but those end at the end of July. I’ll need to find something else to keep me busy – like running! Juggling fitting in workouts has been challenging with the sleep deprivation and caring for a 6 week old. It’s crazy how they do nothing… yet you’re so busy? I envy Joel a bit in that sense, he is so disciplined and will find time to fit a workout in. With Hailey, that meant he was up super early to get stuff done before she would wake up and he would have to go to work. I think it’s been a little better (maybe not the right word because let’s be real, juggling 2 kids is hard) that he is working from home and doesn’t have to commute every day. He’s been able to sneak workouts in over his lunch (we went for a run/walk at lunch today with Miles!) or break his workout up and do a little at a time throughout the day.
I’ve done a couple runs this week with a 3:00/1:00 run to walk interval to get myself moving. I have tried to fit a few Peloton rides in, but I find it easier to run since Miles sleeps in the carseat. He isn’t as predictable with napping in the bassinet.
I’m looking forward to getting more miles in and having that sense of accomplishment again. I know it’s just hitting the heat of the summer, but I’m already looking forward to cooler temperatures in the fall. I always get so excited for that season – it is the best running season 🙂
