Protected: More Miles Stuff
June 9, 2022France Trip! May 2022
June 14, 2022When we were in Florida at the end of April, I took a spill while running. I was sore and not feeling great from it, but assumed it would go away. I played lots of pickleball and continued to try to run on it.
I had a 16 miler to do when we got back, and I made it through that. I was pretty sore so I took a few days off and did my speed workout that week. It wasn’t feeling very good but if I was moving it wasn’t horrible. I went out for my 18 miler and got that in, but when I tried to get out of the car I could barely put weight on my leg. The pain was radiating at the front of my hip and like a C shape around my booty.
I rested the whole week thinking it would get better, but it only got worse. The week before I had to go to Paris, I went in to the Orthopedic Urgent Care. They got some X-rays and could see the cam lesions for my hip – basically the hips don’t fit together perfectly. This makes me susceptible to labrum tearing. I was able to sneak in for an MRI, this was hard to get scheduled since it was an arthrogram – they shoot contrast into the joint to see the labrum better.
I got a call the next day that it was torn pretty badly and would need surgery. At this point, I was on crutches so that I could get some of the pain out and be able to walk around in Paris. Thankfully, the no running and the few days of no weight bearing made it tolerable to walk all over Paris!
The Monday I got back from Paris, I met with the surgeon and got on the schedule.
Joel took me in yesterday for my surgery. The facility was really great. They got me in with barely any waiting in the wait room. I read my book and waited for them to get me after I had changed into my super cool robe. My surgery was scheduled for 1:45 and they walked me back around 2:00. It was interesting to walk myself into the ER and get to see everything. I don’t even remember them telling me to count or anything, I just remember waking up.
I was pretty nauseas when I woke up so they got me some Zofran. The pain was definitely worse than I was expecting. They went in and shaved the bone down a bit and then anchored the labrum back in place – they sent pictures home with me! They gave me some pain meds and muscle relaxant since I kept clenching up with the pain. Things settle down a bit and they brought me to the recovery room that Joel was able to sit with me in. They brought me some water and graham crackers but I couldn’t eat them since they turned into cement in my mouth.. I was able to keep a few saltines down and took another pain pill to try to help with the pain. Joel went to the pharmacy and grabbed my meds and went through discharge instructions and we were free to drive home.
When we got home, the first thing I did was throw up alllll over our entry way… Poor Joel. He helped get me settled into the arm chair in the living room and I started watching the documentary and FLDS Keep Sweet on Netflix… creeeeepy stuff. I kept dozing off so I put on the movie the Other Guys and Joel came and watched with me. I saw maybe 3 minutes of the show before I fell back asleep. I woke up and headed into bed, which was a huge challenge since our bed was so high. A couple hour later, I needed to go to the bathroom but was too worried about getting back into the bed so I just slept in the armchair in the living room. The cats only annoyed me a few times!
I’m super bummed to not be able to run my marathon next weekend.. and instead be on crutches for weeks. The hope is to be back to full activity in 4 months! I will start PT and I follow up with the doc in 2 weeks.
