November 10, 2023Medtronic has a huge internal science and technology conference in the fall every year. They have done a 5k with it the last few years. I decided to run it last minute, the day after my hip injection, when I realized how well my hip was feeling!
One of my coworkers was also running it so we sort of started together… I ran with him for about a half mile before he was going a little too fast for me to be able to maintain. There was another runner who would stay right by my, stride for stride, for the first mile/mile and a half. When we ran over the bridge to head to the grass, he told me ‘good job’ and he slowed down.
I saw one of my coworkers at the turn as a course marshal, he gave me a nice cheer! I turned and ran through the trees and made my way to start the second loop of the grass and woodsy portion. The volunteer at the turn told me I was the first female as I made the turn out to the second loop. I kept trucking along, knowing I was slowing down, but not much I could do about that… running is hard :). A couple of guys passed me on the straight stretch to get to the finish, happily chatting to each other — meanies.
I finished, check my watch – realized the course was a little short, and then heard the volunteer at the finish tell me I was the second female. HUH?! I had never been passed by a female the whole run… I was definitely confused (don’t be too impressed by this… this was a very, very small company race with not many females running).
It turns out that the person they had as first female had missed the second lap so ran significantly shorter than 5k. They corrected the finish times and I got to claim first place! I got a Medtronic water bottle as my prize.
It was a lovely day for a run, great weather (when just a week prior they had to cancel the Twin Cities Marathon due to heat!). The trails by work are so pretty to run on.
I found my screenshot of when I ran this race back in 2018, 2 week post Sioux Falls marathon and a week or so pre Twin Cities Marathon. This was an easy, shake out run… I had to try so hard to not go any faster. Huge contrast to how I felt running this year at a slower pace and definitely pushing it almost as hard as I could go.
