It’s been almost 2 years since I’ve run an in person race between having babies and the pandemic. Twin Cities holds a special place in my heart. I love the course, the support, the time of year.
This year seemed a little different – masks in the corrals, super humid and warm, plus I was only doing the 10 mile instead of the marathon. I have only done the 10 mile one other time besides this weekend and I was definitely running hard in that one. The goal for this race was to get across the finish line in once piece and enjoy it!
The night or two before the run, I reached out to Cristina to see her plans for the run. Thankfully, she dropped back to Corral E with me.
My alarm went off at 4:40 and I was out the door by 5 to head down to Cristina’s house. Her husband dropped us off a few blocks from the start. We found the corral and then wandered around. The potty lines were super long, so we skipped out on those and just headed back to the corral after saying hello to a few friends.
Our corral started walking to the start a little after 7. There were multiple single file lines to cross the start line to try to reduce congestion, but it didn’t really help. Cristina and I kept our masks on for the first half mile or so.
The race was just a lovely run. Nothing stands out too much, except the great company and seeing friends along the way. The race was definitely challenging as I’m trying to find my former runner self, but there was no point in the run where I was truly struggling.
Cristina’s sister in law was at around mile 6, Cristina’s family was just before 7, and I got to see my family right around mile 7. It was honestly one of the best feelings in the world seeing Hailey watching. She was on Joel’s shoulder smiling and she got even more excited when she realized it was me.
Mile 9, a couple of my friends were there being the best cheerleaders with a loud speaker and so much cowbell! I loved the cheers from my running club with the finish line in sight.
We cruised across the finish line and got our medals, post race snacks (yay salted nut rolls!), finisher’s pictures and bag. I left Cristina to wander up the course to go find Joel with the kids.
We went to Cheesecake Factory for brunch with Tucker and my mom before heading home.
Because I had such a great time running – I signed up for the 2022 marathon!
